Our beloved landmark church has been awarded \u00a3362,900 by The National\n Lottery Heritage Fund to complete the restoration of the majestic dome \nand main sanctuary. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
This architecturally ambitious basilica, built in 1933, the church \ndominates Wirral\u2019s skyline, and was nicknamed during the Second World \nWar. Its distinctive green dome has been lovingly known as \u2018The Dome of \nHome\u2019 since mid-20th century, when sailors would see the church from the\n River Mersey. \u2018The Dome of Home\u2019 is one of the last iconic Art Deco \nbuildings to survive redevelopment in New Brighton, whilst still \nretaining its original function, and continues to open its doors for \neveryone to enjoy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Alongside the structural restoration work that will take place, the \nfunding will also ensure that there will be exciting activities to \nenable specific members of our community to discover this historic gem \nfor themselves. Working with partners such as Williamson Art Gallery, \nWirral Borough Council, multiple care homes, community centres, and \nlocal schools and libraries, activities including a dementia friendly \nheritage package, a memory book and heritage talks will be delivered. \nOther activities include a Reformation Workshop for students, continued \nprofessional development for heritage workers, a conference for other \nchurches interested in applying for funding and Heritage Open Day \nscaffolding tours and lectures. There will be something for all ages and\n abilities, and all happening in this wonderful building. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Previous projects have been phased since 2013 and supported through \nthe National Lottery\u2019s Grants for Places of Worship programme, restoring\n two-thirds of the roofs. However, concrete bursting from the Dome ring \nis putting previous investment at serious risk, and water ingress \nthreatens the historic fabric. During the last project, a large lump of \nconcrete fell onto a repaired chapel roof, confirming urgency. \nFortunately, contractors were able to \u2018patch\u2019 repair onsite. This new \nproject will cover the Sanctuary barrel roof with a membrane, repoint \nbrickwork, restore steel windows and cast-iron rainwater goods treating \nthe structural concrete problems, making the whole church safe and \nwatertight. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Canon Amaury Montjean from the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign\n Priest and Rector of the church is delighted. He said: \u201cThis is our \nbiggest project yet, which has taken 18 months of careful planning by a \ncommitted team of people! Thank you everyone, from the architect and \nstructural engineer, to the wonderful volunteers, supported by prayers \nto \u2018Our Lady of Good Success\u2019 from the congregation. We have a special \n\u2018Thank You cuppa\u2019 for all National Lottery players planned to accompany a\n recital of church heritage at The Williamson Art Gallery near the end \nof the project, so watch this space!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Canon Montjean added, \u201cMatch funding is going well, but not yet \ncomplete. AllChurches Trust awarded \u00a312.5k in March 2019 for this \nproject and we have received \u00a315k in private donations. We still have \nanother \u00a317k to raise and launch a further fundraising campaign today.\u201d
Project\n Manager, Anne Archer, was overjoyed with the news. She said, \u201cOur \nvolunteers have worked extremely hard planning this project, proving \nthat we have the capacity to succeed. It is these people who have won \nthis award for our church. The grant will ensure the dome becomes a \nliving, lasting legacy for the New Brighton community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
David Renwick, Director, England, North at The National Lottery \nHeritage Fund, said: The commitment of the Dome of Home\u2019s volunteers is \nto be applauded, as is their drive to share the fascinating heritage of \nthe landmark church with the wider community through a carefully \nconsidered activity programme. Encouraging communities to discover their\n history is positive not only for safeguarding the heritage itself but \nalso for increasing wellbeing and strengthening community pride.
