We<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">are called to imitate<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">this Divine,<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Eucharistic generosity in <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">each of our lives and in every vocation. This<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">leads me to<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">re\ufb02ect today on the gift of<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">faith <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">which we have received<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">in all its fulness<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">in the Church<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">.<\/span><\/span><span id=\"p85R_mc7\" class=\"markedContent\"><\/span><\/div>\n<div tabindex=\"0\" data-main-rotation=\"0\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"textLayer\" style=\"text-align: left;\" tabindex=\"0\" data-main-rotation=\"0\"><span id=\"p85R_mc7\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">I<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">write<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">to you<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">from<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">the<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Cathedral where<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">even<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">the beauty of wood, glass and stone stand in<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">silent testimony to the faith of all<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">those<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">who have shared the journey of<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">our<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Shrewsbury<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Diocese. The<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Cathedral has<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">become a place of pilgrimage<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">in this Holy Year and<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">my<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">letter<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">today<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">is accompanied by a YouTube video<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">that invites<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">you to join me in a virtual pilgrimage <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">to our<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Cathedral<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">. T<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">he \ufb01rst question that<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">will be<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">put to them<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">is:<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u201cWhat do you ask of the Church?\u201d<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Their<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">answer will be<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">a single<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">word<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">:<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u201cFaith.\u201d<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">The<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Catechism reminds<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">us, that<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">we receive the<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">gift of faith through the Church,<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">since the<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Church believe<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">s<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\ufb01rst<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">; and she nourishes and <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">sustains our faith<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">through<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">life<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" aria-owns=\"pdfjs_internal_id_70R\">\u2019s journey<\/span><\/span><sup><span id=\"p85R_mc17\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">iii<\/span><\/span><\/sup><span id=\"p85R_mc18\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">.<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">For we<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">can no more give ourselves th<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">is<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">gift of faith<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">than we can give ourselves the gift of life<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">. This vital task of<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">handing on the faith led the \ufb01rst<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Apostles to describe<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">the Church<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">as<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u201cthe pillar and bulwark of the truth\u201d<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">guarding<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u201cthe faith<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" aria-owns=\"pdfjs_internal_id_67R\">once delivered to the saints\u201d<\/span><\/span><sup><span id=\"p85R_mc19\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">iv<\/span><\/span><\/sup><span id=\"p85R_mc20\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">.<\/span><\/span><span id=\"p85R_mc9\" class=\"markedContent\"><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"textLayer\" style=\"text-align: left;\" tabindex=\"0\" data-main-rotation=\"0\"><span id=\"p85R_mc9\" class=\"markedContent\"><br role=\"presentation\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">The faith<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">we ask<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">to share in<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Baptism<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">wa<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">s put into the<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">words<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">of the \u2018<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Apostles Creed<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">.\u2019 These<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">words<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">used<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">at Baptism<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">from<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">earliest centuries profess<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">the faith received from the Apostles<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">beginning<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">with<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">the<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Latin<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">word \u2018Credo\u2019<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">meaning<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u201cI<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">believe.\u201d<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Today,<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">some<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">of<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">our<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">contemporaries speak disparagingly of<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">what they call<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u2018organised religion.\u201d<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">They<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">suggest<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">a<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u201cdisorganised religion\u201d<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">is<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">more authentic though<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">it<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">would<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">amount to<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">little more than<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">opinions<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">drawn from<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">ever-<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">changing<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">views<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">around us. Such an<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">answer to the great questions<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">of life can never be a secure foundation. And so, the<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Creed sets out<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">the<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">unchanging<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">faith<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">received by the<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Church<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">in all truth, provid<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">ing<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">the sure foundation<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">on which<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">our lives can be<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">built in faith, hope and love.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div tabindex=\"0\" data-main-rotation=\"0\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"textLayer\" style=\"text-align: left;\" tabindex=\"0\" data-main-rotation=\"0\"><span id=\"p1R_mc0\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">When the bishops of the world \ufb01rst gathered in the City of<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Nicaea in 325 AD after centuries<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">of persecution, they<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">made the<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">great<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">profession of<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">the Catholic<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">faith<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">which we call the<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u2018Nicene Creed<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">.\u2019 Gathered in<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">ecumenical council they<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">declared the faith<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">which the Church<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">had received<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">from the beginning<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">and had<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">everywhere believed.<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">It is a moving thought that<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">when<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">you and I declare<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u201cI believe\u201d<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">at Mass,<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">we<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">are repeat<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">ing<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">thos<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">e same words<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">. The need<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">for such a profession of faith<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">was<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">occasioned by the error of one priest, Arius,<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">who taught<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">that<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">while<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Jesus<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">was<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">the highest and most<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">exalted, he<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">was<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">less than God. This dark error<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">occasioned a<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">luminous profession of<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">the Church\u2019s<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">faith, that<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">has echoed through<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">the<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">centuries. For<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">with all the Church we believe in one Lord Jesus Christ who is<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u201cGod from God,<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten not made, consubstantial with the <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Father;\u201d and \u201cthrough him all things were made.\u201d<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Pope Francis,<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">who we<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">are<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">accompanying<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">with our<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">prayer in his<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">time<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">of illness, has asked in this Holy Year of 2025 t<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">hat we especially<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">celebrate the anniversary of the<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Creed<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\ufb01rst<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" aria-owns=\"pdfjs_internal_id_64R\">professed at Nicaea in AD 325<\/span><\/span><sup><span id=\"p1R_mc27\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">v<\/span><\/span><\/sup><span id=\"p1R_mc28\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">.<\/span><\/span><span id=\"p1R_mc1\" class=\"markedContent\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div tabindex=\"0\" data-main-rotation=\"0\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"textLayer\" style=\"text-align: left;\" tabindex=\"0\" data-main-rotation=\"0\"><span id=\"p1R_mc1\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Fifteen years<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">ago,<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">I<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">became a bishop for you<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">.<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">At the heart of this mission, like every bishop<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">before me, was<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">handing on the faith of the<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Churc<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">h.
