My dear brothers and sisters,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I think of you all each morning at the Altar and each evening as we \npray the Angelus before the statute of Our Lady in the Cathedral. I \nthink of your families and your work; of the loneliness of old age and \nthe generous hopes of youth; of those seeking their vocation, especially\n the men discerning their vocation at the Cathedral and our seminarians \npreparing for the priesthood and the young couples preparing for \nmarriage; I think of all our priests and deacons and consecrated women \nand men, and of the whole mission of our Diocese. We know that in the \noffering of every Mass our lives, our prayer, our work and our \nsufferings are \u201cunited with those of Christ and his total offering, and \nso acquire a new value\u201di. In the simple prayer of the Angelus we also \nseek to unite ourselves to the \u201cyes\u201d Mary gave to God\u2019s word and thereby\n to Christ Himself. In the Angelus we say with Our Lady, \u201cLet it be to \nme according to your word\u201d.ii This is a perfect prayer to accompany the \nYear of the Word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the beginning of Lent, the Book of Genesis tells how human history\n began with our first parents saying \u201cno\u201d to God and his loving purpose.\n The Catechism of the Catholic Church<\/em> explains that: \u201cMan, \ntempted by the devil let his trust in his Creator die in his heart and, \nabusing his freedom, disobeyed God\u2019s command\u201diii. This is original sin \nand \u201call subsequent sin would be disobedience toward God and lack of \ntrust in his goodness\u201d.iv Yet amid the disaster of this primeval fall, \nwe hear the first announcement of the Gospel telling of the Saviour to \ncome and of a New Eve, the Mother of Christ, who would truly be the \nMother of all who live. Together with Our Lady we now repeat her fiat, \nher \u201cyes\u201d to all God asks of us and to the grace God wishes to pour into\n our hearts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a time of amnesia \u2013 forgetfulness \u2013 of the Christian past, we \nrecall how England began with this desire to say \u201cyes\u201d to God\u2019s grace, \nin order that a once pagan people might share Christ\u2019s victory in the \nwilderness by learning to live \u201cby every word which comes from the mouth\n of God\u201d and worshipping and serving the Lord God alone.v Our national \nidentity would be forged by the Christian faith we now share. England\u2019s \nMonarchs would entrust this land to the Mother of God so that, like \nMary, we might respond to God\u2019s word in faith. They recognised England\u2019s\n high destiny to be a place where the joy of the Annunciation will never\n fade. vi<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year, the Bishops invite us to renew that solemn act of \nentrustment to the Blessed Virgin Mary amidst the de-Christianisation of\n our society, re-echoing the call with which Lent begins, \u201cCome back to \nme with all your heart\u201d.vii On the Fifth Sunday of Lent, we will make \nthis act of entrustment together at the end of Mass. In Shrewsbury \nDiocese, I want us to also make this entrustment throughout Lent using \nthe simple and profound words of the Angelus. Where Monarchs once acted \non behalf of their people, today may this same act of dedication be \nrenewed in the hearts of each one of us. Let us entrust ourselves, our \nfamilies, our diocese and our whole nation to the Mother of God that we \nmay say with her, a decisive \u201cyes\u201d to God\u2019s grace and God\u2019s plan for our\n lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Angelus seems especially appropriate for this purpose, for it is \nthe prayer of the Angel\u2019s announcement to Our Lady. Following the Second\n Vatican Council, Saint Paul VI commended the Angelus prayer especially \nfor our times as it vividly recalls with the words of Scripture the \nIncarnation of the Son of God and leads us to pray that we may be led \n\u201cby his Passion and Cross to the glory of his Resurrection\u201d. viii Pope \nPaul asked us to use this prayer \u201cwhenever and wherever possible\u201d amidst\n our working day, however busy we might be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This Sunday, prayer cards will be distributed across the Shrewsbury \nDiocese so we can have the words of this beautiful prayer to hand. I \nwish to invite you to pray the Angelus with me each day and especially \naround midday on Wednesday 25th March, when we celebrate the great feast\n of the Annunciation. The two or three minutes we give to this prayer \nwill be like a \u2018breath of fresh air\u2019 in the middle of the day, allowing \nus to raise our minds and hearts to God and to re-direct all to His \nglory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

United with you in this prayer and entrusting us all to the most pure heart of Mary,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
